Last week was very exciting for me as an image I took of our “Ellington Cows” was being installed in our town’s First Selectman office. Carl from The Ellington Printery, was able to print the image on a special type of wall cloth. The mural which stands 52″ X 87″ makes quite an impression when you walk into the office. It’s what we love in our small town…our cows! I’m sure many of you have passed these cows feeding along Hoffman Road at the Oakridge Dairy Farm formerly know to many of us as Bahler Farm.
These are a few of images to show the process of installing a cloth mural this size. It was a challenge but Carl is an expert in his field and together we made it happen! A big thank you to our First Selectman, Lori Spielman who loved my image and wanted to display it.
Please take a few moments and read the history behind this wonderful farm…”Oakridge Dairy Farm“. Thank you Seth Bahler, head of the farm’s management team for sharing with me information about your farm.
The folks at Oakridge Dairy LLC, are excited to say that they are here for the long term. The farm started over 100 years ago with a few cows and a small piece of land bought by the Bahler family. Many people know them as “Bahler Farms”. However, in 2014, they merged Bahler Farms into Oakridge Dairy to simplify the business structure. Today they are milking 1800 cows 3 times a day and farming 2800 acres of land. There is great passion for agriculture here in Ellington and it has been passed down for many generations. The farmers are very fortunate that the ground work has been laid with great animals, good land, and a super team of people. They want to continue to create a quality farm product in unity with our community.
Through the past 30 years they have seen many farms dwindle in this area. Even though their surroundings have made it tougher, Oakridge has still been growing. They are in a very unique area surrounded by many people and these people need food. If you take an average American’s milk consumption, it would mean they are feeding more than 300,000 people a year right now.
Their employees are very important to them. Each one adds something that defines who they are at Oakridge. They are one of the leading farms in our area and they will continue to improve and grow.
Oakridge Dairy LLC objective is to provide quality farm products in unity with our community. Over the next year, they are looking to build a new dairy site that will help them reach their goals. This project will take their 100 year old existing dairy farm to the next level by building a new dairy site. The main focus for this project will include sustainability, efficiency, education and growth. Oakridge is more than just a farm. They are farmers feeding the people of the world and we should all be very grateful for them.
