CTPPA Print Competition.

This past week I took a leap of faith and entered my first ever Connecticut Professional Photographers print competition.  What a wonderful experience…a bit scary I must admit.  Let me explain why that is.  There is a panel of judges that critique your images according to 12 standard elements that must be followed from the Professional Photographers of America Organization.  These 12 elements can be found here.   It’s tough competition, however a great way to see how others view your work and to help you grow and improve as a professional photographer.

In order to receive merit you have to score at least an 80 on your image and then it can go onto more National competitions.  Let me tell you…this is not easy!  There were 17 photographers competing and maybe 4 or 5 received merit for their images.  My highest score was a 78 whichI received for “Beneath The Veil” which is the first image shown here.  I also received a 77, 76 and a 74.  I was told this was fantastic for my first time entering and that these scores meant I was an above average photographer.  However…the best merit I received this week was being told I really have an eye.  That in its self is merit to me!

After competition is over and rewards are given for best in the show you have a chance to talk with the panel of judges to hear how they scored your images.  This is such valuable information because you can take it with you, go back and work of your images and enter them in the next print competition.  I will be doing that with a couple of these images.

So for those of you that really want to grow in our industry, enter print competition you won’t regret it!  Another lesson I was taught this week…from now on when I go out to photograph I’m doing so with the thought of each image being worthy of print competition!

Come join us at CTPPA and learn from the B E S T photographers from around the world during convention time and quarterly meetings.  Click here to find out more information.  I hope to see you and meet you there someday!   Have a great weekend and capture some special moments!
