Theme for this week “First thing in the morning.”
For the past week this is where you would find me first thing in the morning…in the gardens.
I have been on vacation visiting my Mom in Florida and while there I spent time each morning working in my father’s gardens. I say my father’s gardens because Mom was never one who truly enjoying gardening…it was Dad. I lost my Dad a year ago May 13th and I truly enjoyed being surrounded by his flowers and working to keep his gardens beautiful. I felt his presence with me every morning while I dug and weeded and spread mulch and at times tears rolled down my cheeks as I thought about how much I learned from my Dad in the gardens. Growing up on an 80 acre farm we had many gardens and as a child my Dad taught us about preparing the soil, planting, pulling weeds the right way…yes there is a right way and when it was time to harvest our work. I miss those days but the memories come back to me every time I’m in my gardens.
Now that I am home, I am working in my gardens preparing them for the season. Gardening is an outlet for me and being there is where I feel complete peace and fulfillment. It’s one place where I do not hurry…but let time linger on as I think about life…my day…my family…my business. It’s my little sanctuary from the busy world around me and I’m grateful.
Each year I look forward to being in my gardens and feeling the sun on my shoulders keeping me warm while my hands are working hard in the soil…it’s therapeutic and calming for me. It’s a joy to recall how I decorated my gardens last year…and I wonder to myself which plants will I plant this year. It’s nurturing to my soul and each year it’s a journey…a spring time journey.
Spring is blossoming…see for yourself in the photos below. I hope you have begun your gardening…it’s a blessing to have one!
